Week 1

Group 12 Week 1 Devlog - Each member wrote a devlog to show our thought processes while brainstorming for game ideas.

Amy:

We wanted to think about coming up with a game focused on one mechanic, I thought about action words, and the one that stood out to me was shoot.

The concept I came up from that was shooting objects(I refer to them as balls in the images) before they reach you or you’ll lose health. From this I expanded what the game could include:

  • What if there were different types of objects: they get faster. Maybe some take more than one shot to destroy.
  • What keeps players playing? They should be a score, whether that’s keeping track of the Time they stayed alive. Or create a score system, destroying objects give points. Players will play to beat their previous score.

Then I thought about how the objects would move. My favourite is that you would destroy the objects before they collide with each other. From this I came up with an idea that the game could be based around space. You destroy asteroids before they collide!

TJ:

I got my ideas from doodling. Overall I just wanted to think of small silly games that inspired creativity in me as an artist.

My first doodle started with a planet which then developed into a score attack game with gameplay in the vein of agar.io

I then started messing around and liked the look of a cute lightbulb guy I drew, so I made a game idea around that. It's a puzzle game where you have to drag the lightbulb to the goal without touching the walls.

And for my final idea, I just started drawing random shapes and ended up with a cute little fantasy creature. I then thought making a game where you do small tasks to take care of different fantasy creatures could be fun.

James:

During our ideation phase, a goal was to ensure the scope of our game remained small enough so that we could finish and polish the game within the timeframe given.

I had an idea for a game about crossbreeding plants, creating new and unique ones by buying, selling and planting different seeds, which could either be played out like a cosy plant growing simulator, or a pressure and time-based game where you had to use the plants to ensure the upkeep of an underground bunker you are living in.

This allows us to have fun with the art scope, creating fun and unique plants. Each one would be made of 4 parts: Stem, Leaves, Bud, and Flower. When two plants are crossbred, you can get any part of either of the two in the new one. Each part of the plant has a price value assigned to it, which dictates how much the plant sells for.
